Poorna Jagannathan: Early Life, Career, Awards, and Net-Worth

She was born in Tunis, Tunisia, and spent her childhood in Pakistan, Ireland, India, Brazil, and Argentina. She can communicate in Tamil, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi. She studied at the University of Brasilia before graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a degree in journalism. On a scholarship, she pursued a Master of Fine Arts in acting at Pace University’s Actors Studio Drama School. Despite dropping out after the first year, she continued to pursue acting with her mentor, Elizabeth Kemp, whom she met at the school.

Her career began when she starred in television programs such as Big Little Lies, Better Call Saul, and Ramy. She starred as Blacklister #44 on The Blacklist and as the guest lead on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for the show’s 18th season’s double-season finale episodes. She was one of the leads in A24’s 2017 film Share. Share debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay and Best Actor, and was picked up by HBO right away.

She has received critical appreciation for her performance in the 2011 Bollywood film Delhi Belly as a feisty, irreverent journalist. According to the Village Voice “Poorna Jagannathan as the self-sufficient bachelorette who waylays Tashi on his way to the altar is the most enjoyably subversive aspect. Rangy, corkscrew-haired, and with a cautious attitude that can’t be shaken for long, she’s a welcome change from the regular line of Xeroxed, pedestaled beauties.” According to the Mumbai Mirror, Poorna, an unusual pick, is very subtle and performs an excellent job.
According to the Daily News and Analysis, Jagannathan excels in the film, and her “bohemian sex appeal” is “a delightful contrast from the prim and proper ‘heroine’ we are used to witnessing.”
According to the editor of Outlook Lounge, Jagannathan’s performance was a “masterclass in easy acting.” FilmCompanion called Delhi Belly one of the best 25 Bollywood films of the decade in 2019.

She also performs in the theater and serves on the board and as a company member of The Barrow Group in New York City. Deadline.com announced in 2012 that Jagannathan has joined the cast of HBO’s The Night Of as a series regular. Her performance in The Night Of was praised by the Observer’s Vinnie Mancuso, who said, “Poorna Jagannathan, who has delivered one of the year’s most moving performances, continues to shine. Vulture’s Vikram Murthi commented “Poorna Jagannathan’s delicate performance shines brightly. Her facial expressions portray a wide range of emotions. Sonia Saraiya of Variety commented that her performance was “quietly heartbreaking.”

Jagannathan was named as a series regular in the cast of Gypsy in September 2016. Naomi Watts starred in the Netflix series, which was not renewed for a second season. Jagannathan joined the cast of HBO’s Big Little Lies in May 2018 as a recurring character named Katie Richmond, according to Deadline.

Critics liked her comedic performance in Room 104. Vulture’s Kathryn VanArendonk said, “But Jagannathan’s Divya is superior. Divya is instantly identifiable as a character even when she is not physically present. At times, she appears indifferent, while at others, she severely chastises her son for his brusqueness. Her delivery is the foundation of the episode’s wit.”

In 2018, Jagannathan lent her voice to three podcasts in the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series, which is based on novels by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo that were on the New York Times Best Seller list. She read Mary Kom’s, Margaret Hamilton’s, and Madam C. J. Walker’s biographies.
